Central Line Education: Changing the Dressing

How to perform a dressing change for a central line. These are the supplies you'll need to change the dressing on your child's central line. You might receive a kit with all of these items packaged together. Pause the video now if you need to make sure you have all of these items. When changing the dressing, you, your child, and any helpers should wear a mask
This is to make sure you don't breathe near the open line. Keep pets out of the room. Choose a clean, flat surface where you can set up your supplies. Clean the surface using a bleach wipe. Before touching the central line, always wash your hands for 15 seconds or use a hand sanitizer. Next, put on clean gloves. Now it's time to set up your sterile field. Be very careful with this process. If anything touches something that is not sterile, throw the dirty supplies away and start over.
Take off the old dressing. You can use adhesive remover if you'd like. Try to remove the border of the dressing first before removing the part which is on the central line. After you remove the dressing, wash your hands for 15 seconds. Then put on sterile gloves. This is what you use to clean. Squeeze the wings together to activate the chlorhexidine. Clean the central line area for 30 seconds, scrubbing front and back. Make sure to scrub the insertion site and line. Wait for the chlorhexidine to dry. This can take up to two minutes. Put on the dressing and extra tape for security.
The dressing needs to be changed every week or sooner if it gets wet, dirty, or peels off. If the border of the dressing is peeling but most of the dressing is intact and sticking well to the line, you do not need to change it until the week is over. If the dressing is peeled in the clear window, change it right away. Write the date you changed the dressing on tape and stick it on the dressing. That way, you won't forget when you changed it.
